Projects

  • Chicago 2010

  • Project involves the planning and preparation of Workshop(s) at the 2010 LES USA/Canada Annual Meeting, September 26-29, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.
  • South Africa 2010

  • The goal of this Project will be to organize and put on a Workshop at, the LESI Annual Conference in Sandton, South Africa in April 2010 on current development affecting IP and IP licensing in Europe with panelists from UK (Jennifer Pierce), Germany (Rob Harrison), CEE (Marek Lazewski) and France (Arnaud Michel), being moderated by Netherlands (Lex van Wijk).
  • Growth of membership

  • Project has as its goal to increase Committee Membership and participation by engaging those who do not come to the meetings via making the available tools on the Asia-Pacific website more interactive. LESI members are invited to participate in these projects. If you are interested in participating contact the committee chairperson(s).
  • The Quality of the European Patent System

  • The European Commission, DG Internal Market and Services, recently launched a survey that aims to collect evidence on the quality of the European patent system, as perceived by its users. The LESI European Committee is assisting its members to provide the input of European companies, universities and research organisations on the strengths and weaknesses of the European patent system. Such contribution is considered as fundamental to bring about a high quality patent system after the establishment of the European Union Patent and of the European Union Patent Court.

  • Relationship with EPO (IP4INNO)

  • The European Committee has been contacted by the EPO with a view to a possible cooperation on the production of (revised, new, updated) educational material on IP commercialization, including licensing, for the second part of this project which first part of ended in 2008 and which is funded by the EU Commission. In substance, it relates to new modules of “train the trainers” material on such IP issues for SMEs. EPO considers LESI as its preferred partner in this respect. Hayley French (Education Committee) and Christian Appelt (EPO Liaison) are in charge.
  • Relationship with OHIM

  • The aim of this Project is to provide OHIM with the input of LESI and its membership, through the European Committee representation in OHIM’s Users Group Meetings.
  • Study on the Overall Functioning of the Trademark System in Europe

  • The European Committee has initiated and facilitated the preparation and drafting by the Trademark Committee, and the submission by LESI, of a substantial contribution to that study. LESI’s paper was filed on 10 March 2010. A copy of the paper is available on the European Committee’s webpage. LESI has in the meantime been invited to participate to the hearing with the other users associations that Max Planck Institute (the organization in charge of that study on behalf of the EU Commission) is organizing on 22 April 2010 in Munich. Two delegates will represent LESI, one from the Trademark Committee (Elisabeth Logeais) and one from the European Committee (TBC).
  • EU Commission’s monitoring of patent dispute settlements in the pharma sector

  • The European Committee, in co-operation with the Life Sciences Committee, is following up on the EU Commission’s present policy of monitoring patent dispute settlements in the pharma sector. A working group of eight members has been set up, led by Robin Nott and Duncan Curley. By the end of April, an action plan shall be decided and shall be implemented. The purpose is in substance to contribute comments to the European Commission so as to make sure that the European Commission’s final policy in this field is decided upon on an as well informed basis as possible so as not to endanger the valuable and legitimate role and use of patents and other IP rights in the pharma sector. This project will be handled in close cooperation with the Life Sciences Committee and under the supervision of the Board.
  • EU Commission’s Patqual survey

  • The European Commission has commissioned a survey on patent quality in Europe. The European Committee has decided to disseminate this information to the national LES Societies which in their turn will invite their own members to respond to this survey. Besides, the European Committee (led by Christian Appel and Dario Santander) will examine on which questions of this survey it would make sense for LESI to take a policy position. Response to the survey is due by end of April 2010. Goal is for a position paper to be submitted.
  • Premier Circle (IP Law Summit in Brussels in December 2010)

  • LESI, via the LESI European Committee is an advertised partner of this event and has secured follow-up of the organization.
  • Patents & Standards

  • The European Commission commissioned a study from Fraunhofer Gesellschaft on the interface of patents and standards. The European Committee intends to facilitate the LESI’s participation to such survey, in cooperation with the IT Committee.
  • Nanofutures

  • Nanofutures (www.nanofutures.eu) is designed to bring industry, research, networks and NGOs together in the field of European nanotechnology. It is intended to be cross-industry (multi-sectorial) based and address all aspects of nanotechnology including financing, technology transfer, impact on society. There is an impressive list of partners signed up, as can be seen from the webpage. The first event is a conference in Spain (Gijón) during the Spanish EU Presidency. The initiative comes from several research organisations in Europe involved in nanotechnology. Funding is supplied by the EU Commission (DG Research and Enterprise and Industry – note that the new division of responsibilities in the Commission may have changed this). Our goal is to make LES better known in the industry as a volunteer organisation providing additional educational and networking opportunities within and without the nanotechnology community. We might also like to offer one of LES’s educational courses within the context of Nanofutures. We would also like to see this as an opportunity to establish an interest group within LES Europe interested in nanotechnology. We have a more detailed action plan which we shall finalise shortly and submit to the Board. However the main external activities at this stage would be: (i) attendance at Nanofutures Conference in Spain; (ii) poster about licensing in nanotechnology (Joint authorship by Rob Harrison / Dario Santander / Dimitri Stoffels / Jose Miguel Lisxsen – we should like to use LES logo); (iii) letter of introduction (and follow-up telephone call) with Nanofutures Board. Rob Harrison is leading the project.

LESI members are invited to participate in these projects. If you are interested in participating contact the committee chairperson(s).
